Urban started as a locally owned private company in 1967 and the values we started with then are still extremely important to us today. Urban is a family; we do not just include our employees in our family, but our clients and business partners.

One Team Approach
Urban has assembled an exceptionally talented team that works closely with its team leadership to ensure long-term success for its clients. Our mostly homegrown leadership team interacts with the staff daily to ensure every project is efficiently moving towards completion all while mentoring and providing the necessary skills to build the next generation of Urban leadership.
Each of our leaders has decades of experience, providing hundreds of years of collected civil engineering knowledge focused on the Washington DC Metro region it serves.
As leaders, they aid Urban’s success by maintaining positive relationships with all our clients while bringing new clients into the fold. The leaders position Urban so the entire team can do top-tier work that ensures Urban is the go-to company in the land development industry.
The vision of Urban was birthed in Ed Sears’ fifth year while working at Dewberry in Fairfax, Virginia. It was a unique firm, not named after its founder, but a generic industry name and this name would be identified to the specific client and linked to its project manager. Thus, each Project Manager would be “Urban,” to each specific client.
As such, Urban grew from one single individual in 1967, to approximately 110 employees, under one continuous ownership for over 55 years. A headquarters building was established on the 495 Washington Beltway, in Annandale, Virginia in 1980 and with Urban’s growth, it has regional offices in Chantilly and Winchester, Virginia to better serve the entire region.
Urban has fashioned itself as a firm that has always been on the “cutting edge of technology,” passing this knowledge through its work product to its clients.
Client responsiveness and an efficient and timely work product have always been the Urban objective. While at the same time, providing employees with an equal opportunity to advance their careers. Of the top 12 employees at Urban, they have been employed at Urban, for an average of 27.2 years.
Thus, Urban, Ltd. has existed for many years, and will likely be providing the same exceptional product and service to its clients for many more.
